Friday the (not-so) 13th, Part 6

Being a bookworm, I'm really interested in all the Friday the 13th books out there. I was surprised to find out that there are quite a lot of them. And, unfortunately, I cannot afford any of them. But here's a look at some of the books I've found.

Friday the 13th books

Camp Crystal Lake series

As far as I can tell, this series is follows the formula of the movies. Kids going to the lake only to be taken out one by one. They're not novelizations; they're just based on the film series. It seems pretty interesting to me, and I might check them out one day. You can buy these on Amazon, but there is a HUGE difference in pricing between new and used copies. You can get a new one for almost three-hundred dollars; or you can get a used one for thirty cents. It doesn't make sense to me, but when I do finally check it out, I'll be going for the used.

Buy "Mother's Day" on Amazon

Crystal Lake Memories

This is a complete history of the Friday the 13th series, with a foreward by Sean Cunningham. I took a peek inside the book at Amazon, and it seems like it is completely amazing. I would LOVE to have this book in my collection.

Making Friday the 13th

This is the only of the books that I actually own, and it's definitely wonderful. It, if you can't tell from the title, describes the making of each of the movies (not including the newest), including several behind the scenes photos. It is very interesting and has taught me a lot about the series.

Friday the 13th Novelization

These ARE novelizations of the movies, based upon the actual screenplay. I once read an excerpt of the second of these, and it goes a bit deeper into the story of Jason and his mother. I would also love to have these, so I can get to know my husband better (he doesn't talk much, so it's hard as it is to get to know him very well). I've found parts 1, 2, 3, and 6 of these books. I'm sure there are parts 4 & 5 as well, so we know there are at least six novelizations. I'm not sure if Simon Hawke has written books for all the other movies, though.

Buy it!

Friday the 13th series

This is also a series based upon the movies, all written by different authors. It seems interesting, though many of them received terrible reviews on Amazon. I'd still love to read them.

Buy 'em on Amazon!

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash

Out of all these other books, I want these comics more than anything. The story is this: Freddy is dead, and trapped inside Jason's mind. Along with Jason's mother, Freddy convinces him to retrieve the Necronomicon so that Freddy can be resurrected. Ash, along with other S-Mart employees, must stop the madness. According to what I read, Freddy eventually resurrects Jason's victims as deadites, and a huge battle between the three icons commences. I am dying - DYING - to read these. Seriously, I'm dying inside.

Buy it! And buy me one too! :p

There are several more books based upon the Friday the 13th series, and it would be impossible to go through every single one of them. But by following the links I've provided, you can probably find all of them.

Friday the (not-so) 13th, Part 5

Jason has fought a lot of people throughout the years, and several have survived. But we don't really know what happened to them, so let's take a look, shall we?

Camp Crystal Lake Survivors: Then & Now

Alice (Friday the 13th)

Ginny & Paul (Friday the 13th Part 2)

Note: Paul may or may not have been killed. But since we never saw it, and it was never confirmed, I will count him as a survivor.

Chris (Friday the 13th Part 3)

Tommy & Trish Jarvis (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter)

Tommy Jarvis, Reggie & Pam (Friday the 13th: A New Beginning

Yep. THREE survivors.

Tommy Jarvis & Megan (Friday the 13th: Jason Lives)

This is the first time I've seen Thom Matthews (Tommy, as well as Freddy in Return of the Living Dead) outside of the '80s, and sadly I could not find a recent photo of Jennifer Cooke, who played Megan in Jason Lives.

Tina & Nick (Friday the 13th: The New Blood)

Rennie & Sean (Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan)

Steven & Jessica (Friday the 13th: Jason Goes to Hell)

I'll stop there, because there's really no point in going any further. The remaining films came out in the past decade or so, so the actors/characters really look no different. Just watch the movies and you'll know what they look like now. In ten years or so, maybe I'll come back and do then-and-now posts about the rest of them. But for now, we're stopping in 1994.

Friday the (not-so) 13th, Part 4

I thought I'd keep it simple this week and, instead of ranting about the movies, just share my little collection of things. I'm a pretty poor woman, so I really don't have a lot, but I enjoy it and plan on (hopefully) acquiring much more over the years.

My Friday the 13th Memorabilia

DVD Collection

AWESOME Jason action figure from Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood. It looks so good, and is really accurate. I love it!

Really cool game that no one wants to play with me. :(

Shitty hockey mask from Wal-Mart. But it works for my boyfriend when he wants to surprise me on Halloween. ;)

Playing cards

Zippo lighter that doesn't work half the time...

A really awesome book for F13 fans. I haven't read all of it yet (even though I've had it for YEARS), but it's got some really interesting stuff in it, and a lot of really awesome photos.

So that's my collection. It's not a lot, but I'm happy with it for the moment. I'd really like some more action figures. I especially would like some of the Living Dead Doll ones; they're super cute. :) But all this makes me happy, and I smile every time I look at it. I only wish there was someone around who would play the trivia game with me. I will have one more book to add to my collection this coming up monday, when I meet Kane Hodder and get an autographed copy of his autobiography. I am so fucking excited I don't know what to do with myself.

Friday the (not-so) 13th, Part 3

Jason has had to deal with a lot of people over the years. He's had to fight many different kinds of people, but only a few of them were actually worthy opponents. So, the question is:

Who gave Jason the best fight?

There are, I'm sure, many different opinions on this subject. But here, of course, I will give you mine. I'll run through the ones I think were worthy opponents, and then we'll see who was the best.

Tommy Jarvis - In Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Tommy was a young boy obsessed with horror special effects. He made his own masks and such, and in the end, it helped him defeat Jason. He cut all his hair off and made himself look just like Jason looked as a child. It confused him just enough so that Tommy could attack. This led us to believe that, since it was supposed to be the last film of the series, Tommy would "take over" for Jason. In the next film, Tommy was older and locked away in a mental facility. People started dying, and I think the idea was to make us believe that Tommy HAD taken over for Jason. But in the sixth film, Tommy was all grown up, released from the facility, and back to fight the monster once again. See, this is my point. Tommy survived through three of the films. There's always someone to survive in each one, but they never come back in the next (apart from Alice, but she didn't last very long). Tommy kept coming back, and he was never killed by Jason. He hasn't been seen since the sixth film, but he just disappeared; he wasn't killed. Despite the fact that it actually wasn't Jason doing the killing in part 5, I think it's impressive that he could survive through so much, where others failed.

Tina - In Friday the 13th: The New Blood, Tina was a young woman with special powers: telekinesis. She's had these powers her whole life because of a traumatic experience as a child (her father died and she blamed herself), and she's gone back to the lake to face her fears. Along with her mother and a doctor, she wishes to learn to control her powers so she doesn't hurt anyone else. But she starts seeing things: scenes of the partying kids next door being murdered by a monster that she's telekinetically released from the lake. So, instead of controlling her powers, she must unleash them on Jason in order to survive. We all know that Jason isn't the brightest crayon in the box, so mind power is pretty strong over him. Tina's was strong and, since she could hit him from a distance with all sorts of objects, she gave him a pretty good fight.

Kay-Em 14 Kay-Em 14 is from Jason X and she is a fembot. She was created by one of the little nerdy boys on the ship, to be used as a sexbot. But we learn quickly that Kay-Em 14 isn't only good for sex - she's also quite a badass. Since she's virtually indestructible herself, there isn't really much Jason could do with her (or to her). She pulls out the big guns (literally), and blows Jason to pieces. I was actually quite pissed at the fembot bitch for hurting my husband, but all was well in the end.

Freddy Kreuger - Of course, we couldn't leave Freddy off the list. I addressed this one in my last Friday the (not-so) 13th, but we'll go through it again. Freddy is the dream demon, he is the master of mind-trickery. Because of this Freddy, like Tina, gave Jason a hell of a fight. He, unlike anyone else, was able to actually throw Jason around like he was nothing. He also got into his mind and fucked with him a little bit, which actually isn't really saying much. Plenty of people have fucked with Jason's mind over the years, but none quite like Freddy.

I think these four people gave Jason bigger fights than anyone else. But who takes the number one spot? Is it Tommy, the young boy who survived more through more than anyone else? Tina, the girl with special powers? The fembot Kay-Em 14? Or Freddy Kreuger, king of dreams?

Winner: Tommy Jarvis

Tommy takes the win not because of how much damage he caused, but simply because he made it through more than anyone else. He's the only person in the entire series to survive through more than one film. Also, every good horror villain has to has a nemesis. Michael had Laurie, Freddy had Nancy; Jason has Tommy. So, there we have it. Even though some others caused Jason much more harm than Tommy did, Tommy gave Jason the best fight, because he had to deal with him for so many years. And Tommy wound up knowing everything about Jason; he'd dealt with him before, he knew how he worked and how to defeat him. I think in the future, whoever Jason has to fight should locate Tommy Jarvis for advice and guidance - because no one knows Jason like Tommy.

Friday the (not-so) 13th, Part 2

Did Jason beat Freddy?

The famous question, perhaps more famous now than "Which came first…" Well, I'm sure you can already guess who my vote goes to, but just for good measure, I'll explain why.

Freddy gave Jason a good fight, there is no doubting that. Freddy is much stronger than any of the dumb teenagers that Jason has ever had to fight. But, Jason is also much stronger than any of the dumb teenagers Freddy has fought. And Jason is stronger than Freddy. Some would argue that Freddy is stronger than Jason, because he mindfucks his victims. But that's just it - when their battle took place, they were not in Freddy's dreamland, they were in Jason's world. Freddy's mind is far stronger than Jason's, that cannot be denied. But Jason's body? Freddy didn't stand a chance. Freddy was able to get into Jason's dreams and torment him, so maybe that was a mental victory for Freddy. But, do mental victories really matter? I think not.

But if you think about it, Jason mindfucked Freddy a little bit too. Freddy brought Jason to Springwood because he'd lost his mojo. The kids weren't scared of him anymore. He needed someone to start killing, so the town would believe it was Freddy and the fear of him would be renewed. But he didn't think for one minute that Jason – being a vicious killer himself – wouldn't want to stop. Jason stole Freddy's victims and pretty much foiled his plan. Freddy, the man who kills using mind-power, was fucked over by a mongoloid. I think that alone warrants a victory for Jason.

If that's not enough, just look at how each walked away from the fight. Jason walked away missing only a couple of fingers. And Freddy…Well, he didn't walk away at all. He was missing his entire body. Sure, Jason himself didn't decapitate Freddy, but Jason walked away with the least amount of damage, and he was carrying Freddy's head. So, there's really no telling what he did to it afterwards. He could have hacked it into tiny little pieces. Or, better yet, he could be keeping it in the shrine with Pamela's head. Who knows?

Victory – Jason Voorhees.

Do you agree or disagree? You better have some solid evidence from the film if you disagree with me. Otherwise, I will not believe you. :)

Friday the (not-so) 13th, Part 1

In dedication to my favorite movie, favorite horror villain, and future husband, I decided to make Friday my official rant and rave day. If I haven't made clear how much I love these movies, and Jason himself, keep following my blog, and you will surely find out. In my Friday the (not-so) 13th series, I will blog about all things F13, of course! Whatever my heart desires will go here. Photos, little tidbits of information I've picked up over the years, or just rants about the series and/or the icon, because I have plenty.

The many faces of Jason Voorhees

Year: 1980
Played by Ari Lehman. This is Jason as a child, when he'd supposedly been drowned in the lake. Jason attacked Alice, the sole survivor of his mother's rampage, after she killed Mrs. Voorhees. The movie took place twenty-three years after Jason was supposed to have drowned, yet he still appeared as a child. This leads me to believe that Alice was hallucinating, though no explanation was ever really made.

Year: 1981
Played by Steve Dash/Warrington Gillette. This one takes place five years after the previous murders, and Jason is a fully grown man and in farmer-like attire. It is Gillette's face that we see, but Dash portrayed Jason throughout the majority of the film.

Year: 1982
Played by Richard Brooker. This is the film where Jason got his iconic hockey mask. He stole it off of a practical joker, Shelly, and the rest has been history.

Year: 1984
Played by Ted White. Jason was "killed" by Tommy Jarvis, a little boy played by Corey Feldman.

Year: 1985
Played by Tom Morga. Jason actually was not the killer in this one, but a man who was angry about his son being murdered. He pretended to be Jason, and went on a killing spree at the mental hospital where Tommy Jarvis has been admitted. The real Jason only appears to Tommy, in hallucinations/dreams. If you look closely, when Tommy is seeing the real Jason, he has the usual red triangle between the eyes of his hockey mask. The impostor Jason has blue streaks down each side. This is how you can tell if it's the real thing or not.

Year: 1986
Played by C.J. Graham. He is bigger and scarier than before, and kind of funny as well. This one has some of my favorite kills of the series (not because of the gore, but because they're funny). Mr. Graham is an ex-marine, was in good shape, and played the role quite well.

Year: 1988
Played by the king himself, Kane Hodder. This is the first of four films starring Mr. Hodder as our dear Jason (making him the only person to play the role more than once). This, in my opinion, is the best look Jason has ever had. Director John Carl Buechler's vision for this one was brilliant, I think, if just for Jason's look alone.

Year: 1989
Played, once again, by Kane Hodder. Jason looks a little sad and goofy in this one, but I don't mind. There is a scene in a sewer where Jason barfs up some water, and some might not know that that was real. Kane Hodder can vomit on command. He drank a lot of water beforehand, and that is actual puke that you're seeing.

Year: 1994
Played by Kane Hodder. I didn't care much for his look in this one, because his head looked really weird. He actually had many different looks, because he possessed several people throughout the movie. But, this is Jason as we know and love him. His "true form" was a strange little worm creature.

Year: 2001
Played by Kane Hodder. If I had seen this picture before seeing the movie, I would have screamed, "That's not Jason!" But, yes, my friends...That is Jason. He didn't look like this the whole time, but it is just too ridiculous to overlook. Not only was he IN SPACE, they turned him into some kind of robot. Being a huge fan of his "classic" look (hockey mask, ragged clothing), this was not appealing to me whatsoever. He was stronger and harder to defeat, which was good, but come on people!

Year: 2003
Played by Ken Kirzinger. I was destined not to like Jason quite as much in this one, just because Kane Hodder was booted. I love the movie, but Jason just didn't quite seem like himself. The look was okay, aside from the fact that he was black for some reason, with long scraggly hair.

Year: 2009
Played by Derek Mears. Jason was still big, but more lean and cut. Derek Mears did a wonderful job portraying the character, and I loved this movie a lot more than I thought I would. He was lean and mean and mhm mhm good. Kane Hodder will always be my numero uno, but Derek succeeded where others fell short - in making Jason friggin' sexy. He's always been sexy to me, but even more so here.

So, there we have it. Jason's changed a lot over the years, with the only consistency being the hockey mask. But whether he's scary or goofy, huge or not-so-big, he's vicious and unstoppable, and he will always hold a special place in my heart.
